The Center for Africana Studies and Culture (CASC) in the IU School of Liberal Arts in Indianapolis welcomes back its Prestigious Fellow, author, and journalist A’Lelia Bundles for another edition of her “In Conversation” series. In this iteration, Bundles and a panel of experts will explore the importance of teaching Black Indiana history and why all students deserve to see themselves reflected in library books. A graduate of Washington Township Schools, she’ll draw on her personal experience of watching the 50-year pendulum swing from efforts to create a more diverse American history curricula to a backlash that seeks to ban inclusive narratives.
This third conversation builds upon two previous events. The first discussion examined how Black Hoosiers and Black Midwesterners are portrayed in popular culture and how a new generation is re-imagining those depictions. The second installment Displacement Development and Heritage on Indiana Avenue discussed the complexities of displacement and development in historically Black Indianapolis neighborhoods and strategies for future development and heritage preservation.
