Broadening Participation in STEM Fields for Black Youth

This project draws on the long history of scientific mastery within the African diaspora as exemplified by ancestors such as George Washington Carver, Katherine Johnson, Percy Julian, Mae Jemison, Solomon Brown, Wangari Maathai, Edward Bouchet, Benjamin Banneker, Charles Henry Turner, and Ernest Everett Just. Faculty from the Center for Africana Studies and Culture in the IU School of Liberal Arts and the Schools of Education, Medicine, and Science at Indiana University Indianapolis are engaging Indianapolis youth in explorations of the S.T.E.M. fields. Working with a local school, the project will work with 6th through 8th-grade participants in a culturally relevant exploration of scientific inquiry by providing a five-day interactive day camp-style experience.
