Join us for our final exciting events this spring semester!
- a talk – and tasting! – by Indianpolis’ Brotgarten proprietors, Alice and Jeanette, on “German Bread Culture.” IUI Campus Center, room 309, on April 9th at 6p.
- They will discuss everything from becoming an artisan bread baker in Germany to how the baking cultures and bakeries have evolved over time.
- Limited parking vouchers will be available.
- a talk by Dr. Leo Riegert (Kenyon College) on April 18th at the IUI Campus Center, room 309, at 6p: “1/64th By Blood, and You Call Yourself a Native American?”
- Talk abstract: A certificate stating I am the descendant of an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe will serve as a springboard for raising questions of belonging that arise from this apparently straightforward document—questions that are both political and personal. I will discuss the quandaries of using blood in determining Native American citizenship and identity, historically and today, as well my own evolving sense of what it means for me to be “Indian.” This paper is part of a larger project that explores my personal experience growing up in two cultures—one Native American and indigenous, one German Catholic and immigrant—as well the relationship between that personal history and my academic work on German Jews.
- If you cannot attend in person, you may observe the talk (unfortunately, without discussion from online participants) via this Zoom link. Please make sure to register in advance to receive the link to the talk.
All events are free and open to all. Limited parking vouchers will be available upon request for the Brotgarten and Riegert talks.
