Publishing a Critical Edition

  • After all of the variations are recorded and the texts are established for the piece, the actual publication begins. The final text of the piece with its accompanying notes and apparatus will be composed for printing.
  • Page proofs undergo two independent sight collations, and the page references are checked. The book is compiled, and an index is created as well as proofread.
  • A PDF is created for the press and a final proof is requested.

Once the aforementioned steps are complete, editors check page proofs and page references. The page proofs undergo two individual sight collations before the book is compiled and indexing is finalized. The indexing is proofread once again before a PDF is created and sent to MIT Press to be checked by editors there. If the editors at MIT Press find anything they think might be a mistake, they send the book back to The Santayana Edition to request a final check of the text before it is printed.
