As a practicum student, you may be placed in interpreting agencies to gain real-world interpreting experience. With that, 250 hours of service are required, which can be spread out over two years in your junior and senior years. Students’ community service is evaluated by faculty, mentors, and the Deaf community.
Examples of places to volunteer to interpret
- School and professional theatres
- Indiana School f/t Deaf – sporting events, afterschool, tutoring deaf children
- Community sports leagues
- Personal events – wedding, birthday, etc.
- Various Foundations – celebration, awareness events
- Interpreted International Festival poetry
- Campus-wide workshops
- Early language support in ASL lab
- AA meetings
- Church services
- Low-risk interpreting – yoga, personal trainer gyms, quotes for plumbing, fences, etc.
