The Black Health Equity Working Group is an interdisciplinary group of Black educators, activists, and scholars situated strategically in the Center for Africana Studies and Culture in the IU School of Liberal Arts in Indianapolis and dedicated to transformative, community-engaged work with a vision toward health equity. This group meets monthly, has a group study circle that engages relevant material, and has a membership ranging from the School of Medicine to the School of Education with all members holding affiliate status or appointments with the Africana Studies Program.
This is a study of Call and Response as the primary element of equitable community design. This project is in partnership with the lead entity, the Mississippi Center for Cultural Production and in collaboration with Rise Research & Evaluation and is based in Utica, Mississippi. The project seeks to answer questions about the role of artists and cultural memory in interventions around health disparity in Utica, a rural city with a 60% Black population.
