The AMST Ph.D. Program works with research centers at IU Indianapolis to identify, recruit, fund, and train doctoral students. Somewhat like doctoral positions in other fields, AMST students work primarily on research projects rather than function as teaching assistants for faculty in classrooms. These students see the Ph.D. leading to careers outside of academic teaching, and while it is possible that some will become faculty, their training does not privilege traditional classroom teaching.
AMST Ph.D. students work with research centers across the IU Indianapolis campus, thus reinforcing the importance of cutting across disciplines and schools.
