On the first day of the college basketball season, the Sports Capital Journalism Program hosted a discussion on the state of the industry after an unprecedented period of self-examination and change.

More than six months after the findings of the Commission on College Basketball, which resulted in legislation created by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the industry was examined by a group of experts with long histories in the game.

The panel included Bill Benner, a former vice president for Pacers Sports & Entertainment who for decades was a reporter and columnist for the Indianapolis Star; Dan Gavitt, a senior vice president for basketball at the NCAA; Sean Gregory, a senior writer at Time Magazine who played basketball at Princeton University; Mike Krzyzewski, the head coach of the Duke University Blue Devils who led the United States Olympic team to three gold medals; and Michael Marot, an Associated Press reporter whose responsibilities include covering the NCAA.

The panel was dedicated to the memory of Jim O’Connell, the longtime Associated Press college basketball reporter who passed away in July at the age of 64. O’Connell was a president of the United States Basketball Writers Association, a member of its Hall of Fame, and was the 2002 recipient of the Curt Gowdy Print Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for outstanding lifetime coverage of basketball.

The panel, which took place at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, was moderated by Sports Capital Journalism Program director Malcolm Moran.
