IU Indianapolis sociology professor Andrew Whitehead provided expert analysis for a Washington Post column examining a slew of bills in Texas pushing for the insertion of a particular expression of Christianity in the public sphere. The half-dozen bills look to place Christian chaplains in public schools, post the Ten Commandments in every public school, and allow public school employees to engage in religious prayer and speech, among other things. In his comments Dr. Whitehead pointed out that while the share of Americans who strongly embrace Christian nationalism is shrinking, when so many other Americans accommodate Christian nationalism in the public sphere, there is relatively little pushback.
