Maria Brann, Professor, Communication Studies at the School of Liberal Arts at IU Indianapolis

To an audience representing 30 states and 5 countries, Dr. Kelsey Binion, recent graduate from the Health Communication PhD Program, and Dr. Maria Brann, professor of Communication Studies, presented a plenary session titled, “Exploring the Use of Theatre to Inform and Shape Behaviors About Infertility” at the annual Institute of Reproductive Grief Care symposium. They discussed how a staged reading about infertility (“Am I Broken?” which was funded by the Indiana Arts and Humanities Institute and performed in Cavanaugh’s black box theatre last year) highlights the emotional, physical, and social consequences of reproductive grief to educate community members about its stigmatizing nature. Dr. Michaelene Fredenburg, president and CEO of the Institute of Reproductive Grief Care, said, “The presentation by Drs. Brann and Binion was extremely innovative and groundbreaking. They are playing an important and integral part in transforming cultural attitudes and healthcare practices that impact those experiencing reproductive loss.”
