Study abroad programs can last for one week or a whole year. They are often life-changing, and the Arabic Studies Program encourages all students to live and study abroad. You can focus on a variety of topics–from economic development to history– when you study abroad. But being in an Arabic-speaking environment is especially helpful if you wish to increase your fluency in Arabic. One popular option for U.S. students is the Critical Languages Program in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, or Oman. Students joining a Study Abroad Program can apply and obtain financial help via scholarships. For all available programs that have been approved by the university check out opportunities with IU Indy’s Office of International Affairs and the IU Office of Overseas Study.
Another option to advance your language skills is IU Bloomington’s summer intensive Arabic workshop. You commit to communicating in Arabic 24/7 and to living in a language dorm with your fellow students in addition to Arabic-speaking faculty and staff. This is a proven strategy to advancing your ability to speak, read, and write Arabic. You can earn up to 10 credit hours in two months. Scholarships are available.
