Congratulations to Sarah Bennett, who has been named 2025 Arabic Studies Program intern. As program assistant, Sarah will spend the spring semester working on behalf of the program with both students and community members. Her focus will be recruiting Arabic and Islamic studies minors. We interviewed Sarah to find out a more about her.

Q. Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

A. I am a sophomore majoring in Journalism at IU Indianapolis. I am minoring in Arabic and Islamic Studies. I am Turkish American and I really love learning about the world around me. I believe that the more we immerse ourselves in learning about differences, the more we can make the world a better place.

Q. Why are you excited about being the program intern?

A. Because I love all the courses I have taken with Prof. Curtis. As someone with a Middle Eastern background, I knew about some topics but learned more about them through the program. Engaging with other students in conversations about geopolitics, sociology, geography, languages, religion, and philosophy is something that I love doing. It helps get me out of my shell, too!

Q. Why do you think the minor is important?

A. The Arabic and Islamic studies program is important for everyone because it teaches a rich history and culture while opening one’s eyes up to many misconceptions.
