The Arabic Studies Program at IU Indianapolis welcomes Waad Alhbeish as its 2024-2025 program assistant and paid intern. Waad, an Arabic and Islamic Studies minor, will work with campus and community partners to develop and enhance the impact of the program. She will also gain valuable, practical experience in the everyday operation of a higher education degree program.
The daughter of Palestinian and Syrian parents, Waad Alhbeish was born in Syria and spent her early years in Damascus. Her family sought refuge in Jordan as a result of Syria’s civil war. They eventually settled in the United States. Waad graduated from Perry Meridian High School. She spent her first year of college at the University of Indianapolis and then transferred to IU Indy. She is currently a neuroscience major with minors in business and Arabic studies.
An active student and community volunteer, Waad serves as the Vice President of the Middle Eastern Students Association at IU Indy and is a member of Al Taqwa Mosque on the Southside of Indianapolis, where she helps with Arabic and Qur’anic studies classes. In addition, Waad works as a technician in a local pharmacy.
“I have a strong desire to promote cultural understanding,” Waad said, explaining her interest in the position. “I look forward to contributing to the program’s growth and making a positive impact on both the university and the larger Arab and Muslim communities in Indianapolis.”
The funding for Waad’s internship is made possible by the William M. and Gail M. Plater Chair of the Liberal Arts. To support Arabic and Islamic studies at IU Indy, please contribute here.
