Each spring, a different campus in the Indiana University system hosts an intercampus conference on Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS). Watch for details on the upcoming conference, which typically are distributed in early spring.
IU’s 32nd Annual WGS Undergraduate Conference was held virtually due to COVID-19. Students posted their submissions on a discussion board for attendees to view. The theme was ‘Empowering Women: Reading Gendered Perspectives’ and the keynote speaker was Ann B. Kim, a Korean American mixed-media artist. She discussed antipodes, time and space, mythological archetypes, and healing from a gendered perspective.
The 31st annual IU – WGS conference was held at IU Northwest in the new, spacious Arts & Sciences building where students gathered in the morning for a delicious hot breakfast before going to their breakout sessions. The theme was “Women and Power: Policing Gender in Public Spaces,” where internationally known academic, Dr. Sherene Razack, author of 7 books on racism and sexism, spoke on “The Racial/Spatial Politics of Banning the Muslim Woman’s Niqab.” Dr. Razack’s talk inspired many questions and conversations that carried over into the afternoon breakout sessions.
The 30th Annual IU WGS conference was held at IUPUC. The theme was Art as Resistance: Imaging Radical Feminist Spaces. The keynote speaker was Judith Linhares. A three-time National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient, Linhares is an accomplished artist whose resume includes 40 one-person exhibitions.
