Not sure what to major in—or what kind of career you want after college? You’re not alone, and you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
At the IU Indianapolis School of Liberal Arts, we believe that major and career exploration is a learning opportunity, not a one-time decision. It’s a process of discovering who you are and how you want to show up in the world—academically, professionally, and personally.
With the support of our dedicated career consultants and peer career consultants, you’ll explore your Values, Interests, Personality, and Skills (VIPS)—the building blocks to help you make informed and authentic decisions about your major and future career. Your best-fit path may not check every box, but it should reflect a balance that feels right for you.
Decisions about your major and career path should be informed by your Values, Interests, Passions, and Skills (VIPS). It is fine to not have all of them within your career, but your BEST major and career choices allow you to incorporate a balance.
Your values are what truly matter to you or what you need in life to feel fulfilled. They shape how you want to live and work. Some people value creativity, others seek financial security, while some prioritize making a social impact. Consider these questions to explore your values: What do I need in my life to feel satisfied? Do I value stability, independence, recognition, service, or creativity? When have I felt especially proud or fulfilled? How do I define “enough” money?
Interests are the things that grab your attention, energize you, and make you want to keep learning more. They can guide you toward subjects and work that keep you engaged. Consider these questions to explore your interests: What activities do I enjoy—even when no one’s making me do them? What kinds of articles, videos, or topics do I find myself drawn to? If I could take a class in anything, what would it be?
Your personality is your way of moving through the world – your style, preferences, and energy. Understanding your personality can help you find environments and work styles that fit who you are. Consider these questions to explore your personality: Do I prefer working with people, ideas, or things? Do I thrive with structure or flexibility? Am I energized by teamwork or solo projects? Do I lead with my head or my heart when making decisions?
Skills are the things you do well. They include natural talents and abilities you’ve developed over time. Skills you both enjoy and excel at can be strong indicators of career fit. Consider these questions to explore your skills: What do people often ask me for help with? What tasks or projects come naturally to me? What skills do I want to grow while I’m in college? What accomplishments am I most proud of?
