On April 16, the Alpha-Xi-Upsilon chapter of Phi Alpha Theta hosted an induction ceremony to initiate new undergraduate members into the history honor society.

Phi Alpha Theta is an honor society focused on the discipline of history. Its membership is marked by an academic dedication to the study of history. Phi Alpha Theta is also an inclusive society – membership is not restricted to history majors. Applicants must maintain an elevated grade point average in addition to at least 13 credits of history study. The ceremony proceedings were directed by Dr. Daniella Kostroun, current chair of the history department and acting faculty advisor for the Alpha Xi Upsilon Chapter. Dr. Kostroun then invited guest Erin Kelley to speak to the inductees.

Kelley is the program director of Spirit & Place, a public historian, and a public programming professional. As a member of Phi Alpha Theta, she spoke to the new members about the importance of having a well-rounded liberal arts education. She also spoke at length of how her history major was not limiting and that it actually helped her create opportunities for her to work outside of the field. After Erin Kelley finished her speech, Dr. Kostroun then began the Journey Through the Ages of History, detailing the origins of Phi Alpha Theta, along with the expectations bestowed upon the initiates, should they accept the oath.

This induction is quite unique for Alpha Xi Upsilon, as it is the first ceremony conducted since the chapter went inactive during the COVID-19 pandemic. It signifies a commitment from IU Indianapolis to reignite an effort to recognize passion and professionalism in history.

This semester’s inductees were: Grayce Beach, Maranda Harrington, Lucas Lee, and Avery Lester.
