Xin Zhang is a highly respected historian and scholar who currently serves as a Professor in the Department of History at Indiana University Indianapolis, School of Liberal Arts. Born in China, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from East China Normal University in 1982 after passing the first national examination in China after the Cultural Revolution, and then went on to earn his Master of Arts and Doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago in 1986-1991.
Dr. Zhang has made significant contributions to the field of history through his research and publications. His first book, “Social Transformation in Modern China: The State and Local Elites in Henan, 1900-1937,” published by Cambridge University Press in 2000, was a groundbreaking work that examined the social, economic, and political changes that occurred in Henan Province during the early 20th century.
His most recent book, “The Global in the Local: A Century of War, Commerce, and Technology in China,” published by Harvard University Press in 2023, explores the impact of global forces on China’s economy and society over the past century.
Dr. Zhang is also a prolific writer in Chinese, with two books published in China: “地方视野中的全球化” (中华书局, forthcoming)iii, and “二十世纪中国社会之演变” (中华书局 in 2004).
In addition to his book publications, Dr. Zhang has also authored numerous articles in prestigious academic journals such as the Chinese Historical Review, Asian Review of World Histories, and Frontiers of History in China. He has tackled a wide range of topics including Chinese commercial transformation, the Opium War, Chinese science and technology, and the 1911 Revolution, offering fresh insights and new perspectives that have contributed significantly to the field of history.
