The city of Indianapolis and IU Indianapolis offer many possible locations for undergraduate students to gain direct experience as interns. Students are able to earn course credit through History 425 as interns.
The History Department supports graduate students during the academic year to the fullest extent possible through a combination of merit-based School of Liberal Arts tuition scholarships, community partner- and campus-funded paid internships, campus-funded Community Engagement Associates, and faculty research grants. In recent years, the Public History program has also been able to arrange for a small number of assistantships and internships during the summer months.
Current intern partners include: Indiana Humanities, Indiana University Health Archives, National Council on Public History, American Legion Archives, James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home (2 positions), Indiana Historical Society (3 positions: Divisions of the Press; Education and Engagement; and Exhibits), Crown Hill Heritage Foundation, Indiana Medical History Museum, Indiana State House Tour Office and Education Center, and Indiana State Archives.
Because the specifics of financial awards can vary from year to year and the costs of tuition vary significantly based on your state of permanent residence, we encourage you to contact the Director of Public History for information about award amounts before applying.
