You can take a variety of courses from the introductory to advanced courses in language and linguistics, culture and literature, and applied areas (translation & Business French).
FREN-F 131 First-Year French I (4 cr.) This is the first course for beginning students of French with no experience in the language. This is not a course for native speakers of French. Start here to learn to communicate with others in French! If you have previous experience learning French, please take the placement exam. Placing into and successfully completing language courses above the 131 level (132 or above) may allow you to request special credits for the skipped courses at a greatly reduced fee.
FREN-F 132 First-Year French II (4 cr.) This is the second course for beginning students of French and follows F131. This is not a course for native speakers of French. FREN-F 203 Second-Year French I (3 cr.) This is the third course in the French-language sequence and perfect for those continuing from F132 or those who have some experience and want to keep learning. This is not a course for native speakers of French.
FREN-F 204 Second-Year French II (3 cr.) This is the fourth course in the French-language sequence and perfect for those continuing from F203 or those who have some experience and want to keep learning. This is not a course for native speakers of French.
FREN-F 271 Topics in Francophone Cultures This course is taught in English with varying topics each time it is taught. This course does not count toward the minor or major.
FREN-F 300 Lectures et analyses littéraires (3 cr.) History, culture, language, communication and more, OH MY!! Advance your cultural understanding AND French reading & analysis skills all at the same time through French & Francophone literature. A variety of shorter and longer works will be included as your abilities progress.
FREN-F 315 Conversation and Diction I (3 cr.) Want to improve your communicative skills in French? In this course you will develop accurate pronunciation and fluidity of speech while also learning to recognize and adapt to the different kinds of speech used in a variety of communicative contexts.
FREN-F 316 Conversation and Diction II (3 cr.) In this course you will focus on the development of accurate pronunciation and fluidity of speech through the discussion of French and francophone history and culture, while also targeting the ability to recognize and adapt to the different kinds of speech used in a variety of communicative contexts.
FREN-F 326 French in the Business World (3 cr.) Parlez-vous la langue des affaires? Introduction to the language and customs of the French-speaking business world. Designed to help prepare students to take the Diplôme de français professionnel offered by the Paris Chamber of Commerce.
FREN-F 328 Advanced French Grammar and Composition (3 cr.) The name of this course may not grab your interest, but the content will! Gain confidence in your French by workshopping your writing through innovative and engaging activities.
FREN-F 330 Introduction to Translating French and English (3 cr.) Further your understanding of these languages as you lay the groundwork for a professional role in translation through this introduction to the tools of the art of translating French and English.
FREN-F 334 French for the Medical and Technical World (3 cr.) Personal and professional situations inevitably involve medical and technical issues. In this course students will gain an awareness of these issues as they relate to the francophone world and gain proficiency in French language skills to communicate effectively and in a culturally-aware manner in these contexts.
FREN-F 336 Structure of French (3 cr.) Do you know there are “tenses” and “moods” in French … sign up for this class and climb out of your “tense mood” about the structure of the language as you’ll understand the “pourquoi” of French!
FREN-F 350 Topics in Francophone Culture (3 cr.) Emphasis in this class is on a topic, author or genre within francophone studies and will vary each time it is offered.
FREN-F 352 Culture, Société, Langue et Littérature au Québec (3 cr.) Drawing on cultural products from the earliest days of exploration to the present day, this course introduces students to an array of texts that sample Québécois literature, popular culture, art, music, and politics. The interdisciplinary approach will challenge students to improve their French language skills while learning about one of our closest French-speaking neighbors: Quebec.
FREN-F 360 Introduction socio-culturelle à la France (3 cr.) What is life like in France these days? Check in here to find out! This class includes a study of France and its people through an examination of political and cultural developments in the country. That study helps inform and provide background for the study of the contemporary and pop culture spaces.
FREN-F 371 Topics in French (3 cr.) P: F204 or equivalent, placement test results, or by authorization of the department. Topics in French literature and culture will be explored from a variety of perspectives. The course will be given in English. Does not count towards the major. PUL=2,5 May be taken twice for credit if topic differs.
FREN-F 380 French Conversation (3 cr.) Feel a little tongue-tied in French sometimes? Or like you have so much to say and just aren’t sure of how to say it? Take your French-speaking skills to the next level with conversation training on advanced topics.
FREN-F 391 Studies in French Cinema (3 cr.) In this course, we will explore the complex interplay between French literature and film adaptations. We will analyze selected novels and short stories in relation to film versions of the same works in order to gain an understanding of what is involved in adaptations from the written word to the visual.
FREN-F 396 Study of French Abroad (1-6 cr.) Credit for foreign study in French language or literature when no specific equivalent is available among departmental offerings.

FREN-F 421 Fourth-Year French (3 cr.) Want to learn more authentic French? This course examines the differences between the written Standard French of textbooks and the many ways French is actually used in real-life settings, considering not only the informality of the spoken language but also variation across different regional varieties of French.
FREN-F 423 Craft of Translation (3 cr.) Further your understanding of language as you lay the groundwork for a professional role in translation through this advanced course in the tools of the art of translating French and English.

FREN-F 493 Internship in French (3 cr.) A field experience in the applied use of French in a professional workplace environment. Previous course work and experience are integrated in a practical application locally or in a French-speaking country.
FREN-F 495 Individual Readings in French (1-3 cr.) For majors only with consent of the Director of the Program in French.
FREN-F 497 Capstone in French (1-3 cr.) A senior-level summative experience for French majors that integrates students’ undergraduate study in the discipline. Students showcase academic progress through a capstone portfolio, a reflective journal, discussions with a faculty capstone director, and by a final presentation to students and faculty.
