Angeline Larimer, MFA, MA, GCMH, is associate faculty for both the Medical Humanities & Health Studies and Applied Theatre, Film, & Television programs at Indiana University Indianapolis.
Larimer is also the Lead Dramaturg for PlayPenn, an MFA & Dramatists Guild playwright, a bioethicist, and a medical humanist at the intersection of health humanities and theatre.
As a playwright bioethicist, she uses theatre as a vehicle for public health, incorporates applied theatre and ethics into health and medical education, and helps individuals share their stories while retaining ownership of their narratives by utilizing methods and principles borrowed from bioethics, verbatim theatre, narrative medicine, Saidiya Hartman’s critical fabulation, and ethnodrama. Her focus is wherever theatre can be used to facilitate social justice, specifically in the direction towards health equity. Themes she has incorporated within scripts include the effects of war on health – particularly on combat veterans, long term effects of racism on health, stigmas and substance use disorder, the impact of eugenics on 20th century Indiana families, and the difficulties of end-of-life decisions. As a community educator, Larimer teaches “Ethics and the Fundamentals of Playwriting” for PlayPenn, fostering conversations about unintended consequences of creative work, and the responsibilities of the storyteller. In 2022, she developed Theatre for Veterans in collaboration with licensed clinical social workers and the Indiana Dept. of Veterans Affairs to offer free online playwriting classes to veterans of the armed forces. She is also a guest scriptwriting facilitator for Indiana Prison Writers Workshop. As a bioethicist, she works with INSTEP Indy, as well as the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) on the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) grant to help prevent overdoses in Indiana.
She is a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH), Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE), Dramatists Guild of America, Indiana University Conscience Project, Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA), and Parent Artist Advocacy League for Performing Arts + Media (PAAL).
