For most students, there’s one item at the top of their list of goals: graduating. For Liz Ale, a 2019 graduate student in the Museum Studies Program, presenting at a conference was a close second.
She decided that she wanted to submit her work to the Second City Anthropology Conference at the University of Illinois at Chicago, writing a paper on how museum professionals can use technology to increase Native peoples’ access to their items that are currently kept in museum collections.
As a graduate student, finding room in a budget for travel can be difficult. Liz was able to apply for a Museum Studies Program Conference Travel Fellowship, funded by the generosity of donors like you. She was awarded the funding to travel to Chicago and present her research. Before she knew it, Liz was driving up to Chicago where she would present her paper at a panel on the intersection of reconstructive human niches and digital technologies.
Liz managed to keep her nerves in check for the first two presentations, but when it was her turn to speak, a crowd of people streamed in the room and her stomach dropped. She steeled herself, stepped up and gave an amazing presentation, speaking confidently and strongly. Liz answered every question asked and was even stopped by several people afterwards, all of whom complimented her presentation and wanted to learn more.
Liz achieved much more than crossing “speak at a conference” on her list of goals. She gained confidence in herself as a speaker, a writer, and a museum professional – and it’s all thanks to our donors.
