As a student in Africana Studies certificate, you will explore the life, history, development, politics, culture, religion, health, environment, resources, growth, and economies of people of African. The certificate enables you to supplement your education in your major discipline with a concentration on African Studies.
To be admitted for a certificate in Africana Studies, you must complete:
- 55 credit hours toward a degree at IU Indianapolis
- a cumulative GPA of 2.5
- the School of Liberal Arts online declaration form
To earn a certificate, you must complete:
- 18 credit hours in Africana Studies with a minimum grade of C in each course
Core Courses
- For the minor, you take AFRO-A 152: Introduction to African Studies (3 credits), plus either AFRO-A 200: Research in African and African Diaspora Studies (3 credits) or AFRO-A 495: Individual Readings in African American and African Diaspora Studies (1-3 credits).

In addition to the core courses, you may choose four elective courses.
