The University Writing Center is a community of writers supporting writers. Our work is conducted through peer-to-peer mentoring by undergraduate, graduate, and faculty writing consultants and is available to all levels of IU Indy writers: students, staff, and faculty.
Our writing consultants are experienced peer-consultants who have completed a writing center education course prior to employment. They enjoy reading, writing, and talking to others about their writing.
The UWC offers IU Indy writers an opportunity to improve their writing process. Our staff are trained peer-consultants, but it’s important to note that a peer-consultant is not an editor and will not copyedit your paper (or other written product) for you. The graphic below illustrates the different services offered by peer consultants versus copyeditors.
We are proud to collaborate with IU Indy’s ePortfolio Studio, and you can schedule an appointment with either UWC or eP consultants using our scheduling software. The graphic below should help you select which kind of consultation to schedule:
Writers of all skill levels can benefit from working with writing consultants at any stage of the writing process, be it brainstorming, drafting, revising, or final polishing. Writers can schedule up to two sessions a day and four a week.
We offer several modalities; your consultation could be face-to-face, either in person at one of our physical locations or online (synchronous); if you can’t make it in to a center or if the hours offered for online consulting conflict with your schedule, we also offer eTutoring (asynchronous online submission and agenda setting [upload files and explain areas of concern when you make an appointment-attach documents to the Appointment Form], and written feedback (on Client Report Form emailed to you at session’s end).
Though most of our services are one-on-one consultations and writing workshops, we also off in-class workshops facilitated by consultants addressing a variety of topics including the writing process, thesis-driven writing, avoiding plagiarism, and citation support. If you are interested in having us conduct a workshop for your class, please email us (uwc@iu.edu) and in the subject line, say “Attention, Directors: Request for In-Class Programming.”
We also participate in campus events to promote engagement with the University Writing Center community.
