With graduation on the horizon, it is the perfect time to take a step back and reflect on my time with IUPUI. Growing up, I had always been told to take advantage of every opportunity that is presented to me and find a way to grow from it. This same mantra paralleled the foundation and mission of the Department of Journalism and Public Relations at IUPUI. In my final semester, I have found that comfort knowing I was able to achieve great job possibilities with the assistance of the program.
In college, the classic saying is that you go to discover who you are and what you want to be. As cheesy as the message it, it could not be truer. I found a passion in social media management and worked to develop a solid understanding in the craft. With online courses, trial and error, and advice from professors, I was able to land the position of social media manager of a national organization my junior year. With this role, I was able to conduct interviews with fellow collegiates, solely conduct a social media presence over five platforms, and aid in crisis communication. Not only was I growing in the classroom, but I was also challenging myself in the professional world by utilizing the skills from my lectures. Obtaining external experience while in college is a great way to network and build your professional portfolio, something I highly recommend to each student I meet.
With two short weeks left before I tie a bow on my time with IUPUI, I am thankful for every lesson that has brought me to this point. Thank you for my professors who assisted in my growth, the community for welcoming young professionals, and to IUPUI for giving students the assets to reach their goals.
