Using Your IU Google Account

FERPA Issues

Regular Google services are NOT FERPA compliant. This means that:

  • Your faculty IUGA does not come with an associated Gmail account. Even thought it looks like an email address, yourIUname@iu.edu is only your login ID. It does not receive email.
  • Faculty cannot use Gmail for student communication. This includes the faculty’s Personal Gmail Account, either directly or indirectly (i.e. by having their IU email forwarded to their PGA).
  • Documents that fall within FERPA regulations (or similar) cannot be stored on regular GDrive, either PGA or IUGA. Instead, faculty need to request secure storage space for such documents at Storage@IU.edu. The request takes minutes to complete and can be used for Google or Teams.
