This episode of Ancient HBO brought to you by CLAS-C 205 Classical Mythology – Because Westeros has nothing on the past.
Also, spoiler alerts, if that’s still a thing for OG Game of Thrones…
Arya Stark feeding Walder Frey his own children may seem pretty harsh. But “serving kids for dinner” is a surprisingly frequent theme in Greek Mythology. Kids are fed to their parents by relatives, to parents by parents, and to strangers by parents. Motivations run from desperate revenge, to idle curiosity about whether the gods are omniscient (answer: maybe?). For reasons unknown, THIS motif of all things has been carried through the ages, from Shakespeare to South Park to Arya’s list. And people say we can’t learn anything from the ancient past.
