Course
The primary curricular unit is the COURSE. Each COURSE has a particular:
- subject
- topic
- level (indicated by catalog number)
- title
- course code, made up of a subject code + topic code + catalog number
- intended learning outcomes and PLUS (or similar)
Example: CLAS1-A2 3013 Classical Archaeology4
- subject: CLAS (Classical Studies)
- topic: A (archaeology?)
- level: 301
- title: “Classical Archaeology”
Once approved, the COURSE becomes a permanent unit applicable to the entire IU system.
Class
A CLASS is a particular opportunity to take a COURSE. Each CLASS has:
- its own 5 digit number
- (at least one) IOR
- semester
- a format (online, f2f, or hybrid)
- a MP (for online CLASSES this may be ASYNCHRONOUS)
Example: A class of CLAS-A 301 (123451) will be offered by Prof. E Thill2, Spring 20193, f2f4, TR 12:00-1:15 PM.5
- 5 digit number: 12345
- IOR: Prof. E. Thill
- semester: Spring 2019
- format: f2f (face-to-face)
- meeting pattern: TR 12:00-1:15 PM
Because a CLASS is a single, non-repeatable iteration, it:
- is applicable only to one campus and one semester and thus
- has no independent existence outside of a schedule
- is the unit used for many administrative purposes, including calculating students and credit hours taught
- receives its own Canvas site
