The Global and International Studies (GIS) program offers several scholarships and awards to students who have excelled in its program. Some of these awards recognize outstanding academic achievement and performance, while others support students engaging in research related travel and students demonstrating financial need. These are given annually. Apply each spring.

Note: Students who qualify for Honor’s College automatically receive $2500 for study abroad.

Global and International Studies Academic Achievement Award

Overview

The Global and International Studies Program presents this award to a Global and International Studies outstanding student.

Criteria

Recipient must major or minor in Global and International Studies. The recipient must demonstrate excellence in the field, have made outstanding contributions to the program, have achieved a superior grade point average, and have the support of the faculty.

No student application, faculty nominated and selected. If you wish to be considered for this award, please discuss with your faculty mentor or program director.

GIS-Related Scholarships

P.M.G. and M.S.W. Harris Study Abroad Scholarship

Eligible candidates will be students majoring in a School of Liberal Arts discipline and enrolled in an accredited study abroad program for a semester or year­long academic program. In selecting recipients, preference will be given to students majoring in history or graduate students in history.

Audrey Harshbarger Study Abroad Scholarship

This award seeks to support students who study abroad because that experience develops a person’s understanding of our place in a global society, and the donors believe that this experience is integral to a person’s education.

Alice Chandler Gockley and Gordon E. Gockley Memorial Scholarship

The Alice Chandler Gockley and Gordon E. Gockley Memorial Scholarship supports undergraduate students for international study. The recipients must be enrolled in the School of Liberal Arts and will have been accepted to an accredited international stud program or enrolled in a Liberal Arts course that contains and international component that requires travel outside of the United States.

Tom Dean and Chieko Chambers Study Abroad Scholarship

This scholarship provides support for international educational experiences for students engaging in social, cultural, and/or historical academic endeavors. The recipient will be an undergraduate enrolled in the IU School of Liberal Arts who are participating in an IU approved, credit-bearing overseas study program as part of an educational experience for a semester, academic year, summer study, or short-term program.

Margaret A. Cook Foreign Study Scholarship

This scholarship was created to promote and encourage the study of French and other modern foreign languages and is presented to a student who is majoring in the IU School of Liberal Arts in Indianapolis and has demonstrated outstanding achievement in the study of a modern foreign language. The scholarship may be used to help the student go on an accredited study abroad educational opportunity.

Office of International Affairs Scholarship

International Experience Scholarship

Need help funding your study abroad experience? As an undergraduate or graduate student, you may be eligible to apply for the International Experience Scholarship. The International Experience Scholarship is offered through the Office of International Affairs. We have two award cycles per year, and preference is given to students who have not previously studied abroad.

Note: GIS majors (not minors) are eligible for the $2500 study abroad grant through the Office of Study Abroad.

The Shreve Study Abroad Scholarship

Need help funding your study abroad experience? As an undergraduate student, you may be eligible to apply for the Shreve Study Abroad Scholarship of $2,000. The Shreve Study Abroad Scholarship, offered through the Study Abroad Office, was created in order to support and encourage global learning for IU Indianapolis undergraduate students through participation in an approved study abroad program.

Study Abroad Planning Grant

Need help funding your study abroad experience? As a degree-seeking undergraduate student within your first year at IU Indianapolis, you may be eligible to apply for the Study Abroad Planning Grant of $3,000. The Study Abroad Planning Grant, offered through the Study Abroad Office, was created in order to support and encourage global learning for IU Indianapolis undergraduate students through participation in an approved study abroad program. Applicants to the grants do not need to have already identified a program or know exactly what they would like to do abroad. This is an opportunity to explore all international options.

Ivy Tech Transfer Student Scholarship

Need help funding your study abroad experience? Are you an undergraduate transfer student from Ivy Tech? You could receive a $2,000 award through the Ivy Tech Transfer Student Study Abroad Scholarship, offered through the the Office of International Affairs. If you’ve completed a degree or certificate from Ivy Tech in the last three years you are eligible to apply. The scholarship is awarded twice a year in two cycles.
