Workplace Writing Microcredential

Employers consistently rank communication as a top career competency, and this microcredential prepares students to stand out in job applications by developing strong writing and workplace communication skills. The Workplace Writing Microcredential is designed for students who want to strengthen their professional communication skills and gain hands-on experience in workplace writing. Through coursework and real-world experience, you will learn how to write professional documents, collaborate with teams to solve real-world workplace problems, and communicate effectively in professional settings. Whether you’re planning a career in business, marketing, communications, or any other field, professional writing skills will give you an edge.

Courses Required (7-9 credit hours)

To earn the Workplace Writing Microcredential, students must complete:

  • ENG-W 231: Professional Writing (3 credit hours): Learn the fundamentals of professional communication and work in teams to complete a research project for a local business.
  • ENG-W 331: Business and Administrative Writing (3 credit hours): Build on W231 by learning how to write internal and external business documents.
  • ENG-E 398: English Internship (1-3 credit hours): Gain real-world experience by working with a business or organization. Earn 1 credit hour for every 50 hours of internship work (up to 3 credit hours).

Students can enroll in W231 or W331 at any time. The internship course (E398) requires coordination with an internship supervisor in the Department of English, home department of the microcredential.
