Senior Justin Haberstroh and junior Ashley Wilson have been named finalists for the 37th Annual Thomas R. Keating Competition.
Haberstroh, a journalism major, is the editor-in-chief of The Campus Citizen, IUPUI’s student-run publication. Wilson, campus editor of the Citizen, is double majoring in Journalism and Creative Writing and minoring in Classical Studies.
The Keating Competition, organized by the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation, is a writing contest that invites 10 college student finalists to Indianapolis for a live reporting and writing exercise each November.
This year, the competition will take place on Nov. 3 and 4, with a celebratory Keating Banquet taking place the evening of the 4th. Dana Hunsinger Benbow, IndyStar sportswriter and the 2023 SPJ Indiana Journalist of the Year, will give a keynote address.
Haberstroh and Wilson both said they are honored to have been chosen for the competition.
“Although I am really nervous about the competition, I’m also really excited for the experience,” said Wilson. “I always consider it an honor to be around and learn from other journalists, both my peers and those who are fully established in the field.”
Haberstroh said he is looking forward to competing against other fantastic writers. “I love to compete, and this will be a great opportunity to put a spotlight on me and the other writers and hopefully get a great story out of it.”
The competition is held in honor of the late Indianapolis Star columnist Tom Keating. The top three entries will split $6,000 in award money.
