In addition to a few competitive positions working as research assistants, some of our students present their research at conferences and are coauthors on faculty publications and reports. The University Graduate School offers travel grants to present research at conferences and students have been involved in service activities and have won awards for their work.

Many of our students have been accepted and gone on to study in PhD Sociology programs, such as Wayne State, Ohio State, UC Santa Barbara, Florida State, Penn State, University of Illinois, Georgia State University, University of Cincinnati, Portland State University, Syracuse University, and the University of Hawaii. Our student body is made up of a mix of traditional and returning students, part-time and full-time students, and domestic and international students across all demographic areas.

There is no formal training offered through our Department. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IU Indianapolis offers seminars, workshops and conferences that specifically target graduate students. Our students have completed internships in a wide variety of places, including the Damien Center, the Never Alone Project, Girls Inc, the Indiana State Department of Health, as well as research internships for different Centers on campus (e.g., Survey Research Center, the Polis Center, SPEA’s Urban and Health Policy Center.)

Yes, to remain in good academic standing, students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA (B average). No grade less than a C will count towards your graduate degree.
