Donations to our School and department have helped countless students gain the experience needed to achieve their dreams.
One former student, Brendan Rourke, M.A. ‘19, covered the 2019 Pan American Games for Team USA in Lima, Peru, with the Sports Capital Journalism Program. His trip was made possible by donors like you.
“I was immersed in an event bigger than I’ve ever seen. A celebration of sports, culture, and everything in between surrounded me. I got to catch a glimpse of the daily lives of people that live in another country. And I won’t forget a single second of it.” – Brendan Rourke, M.A. ‘19

When Alaa Abdeldaiem, Certificate of Journalism ’18, traveled to California to cover the 2018 Rose Bowl with the Sports Capital Journalism Program, she was taking part in something she’d dreamed of almost her entire life. She had wanted to be a sports journalist since third grade.
Along with fellow student Sarah Bahr, Abdeldaiem was thrown into the mix with professional journalists covering the game and the events leading up to it.
Students who go on reporting trips with the Sports Capital Journalism Program “learn how to navigate covering a large sporting event, and come out of the experience realizing, ‘I can do this,’” said Malcolm Moran, director of the Program. “These are life-changing experiences.”
Abdeldaiem landed a reporting job at Sports Illustrated after graduation and is now a Regional Coordinator for the Islamic Society of North America.
It goes without saying that these real-life-learning trips are costly — transportation, lodging, and meals add up quickly. Students can participate in these events because of donations to the School and department.
Thanks to donors like you, liberal arts students can learn about the world around them by taking part in momentous experiences—creating a new generation of scholars committed to bringing news and information to the world.
We hope you’ll keep in touch and stay involved with our department after your graduation – contact us now!
