Biography

Dr. Elizabeth Kryder-Reid is Professor of Anthropology and Museum Studies in the IU School of Liberal Arts, (IUPUI). She directed the IUPUI Museum Studies Program from 1998-2013 and is currently Director of the Cultural Heritage Research Center. Her research explores questions of how humans appropriate the tangible and intangible remnants of the past and mobilize them in the constitution of social relationships. She is particularly interested in the intersections of landscape and power and how materiality, whether the built environment or other forms of material culture, is deployed in the contestation of social inequalities across boundaries such as gender, race, class, ethnicity, and religion. She has disseminated this work in a variety of scholarly formats including publications, posters, presentations, and exhibits. Her research on the California mission landscapes focuses on the interpretive narrative of the Spanish colonial missions over more than a century and examines how contemporary audiences experience and view the mission heritage. Her book on that research,California Mission Landscapes: Race, Memory, and the Politics of heritage was published by University of Minnesota Press in 2016, and she is co-author of Keywords in American Landscape Design (Yale, 2010). Her most recent projects examine stakeholder-defined heritage in two contested heritage sites in central Indiana, USA and explore the landscapes of social inequality in Indianapolis for a digital storytelling map "JustIndy".
