Biography

Josh Prada (PhD Texas Tech University) is Assistant Professor of Spanish Applied Linguistics in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in applied linguistics and language education. Before joining IUPUI, Josh was a graduate instructor of Spanish, and served as coordinator of the Spanish program for heritage speakers, and coordinator of the Bilingualism ad Second Language Acquisition Lab at Texas Tech University, where he got his PhD. He holds a MA in Applied Linguistics from Birkbeck, University of London (United Kingdom), and a BA+MA in English Philology and TESOL from the Universidad de Granada (Spain).

Service

Josh is Associate Editor of the Spanish as a Heritage Language Journal (University of Florida Press), and Reviews Editor of the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism. Moreover, he serves as editorial board member of two international journals: Translation and Translanguaging in Multilingual Contexts (John Benjamins) and MODULEMA: A Scientific Journal for Linguistic Diversity (Universidad de Granada Press). At IUPUI, Josh created and convenes the Applied Linguistics Network, and chairs SHLED-In (Spanish as a Heritage Language Education Day-Indiana).

Research Activity

Josh Prada’s work is in the interdisciplinary field of bi-/multilingualism, with particular attention to the areas of heritage language education and translanguaging/translinguistics, and their applications to curricular development and pedagogical innovation, teacher education, and social cognition. Josh Prada’s works have appeared (and are forthcoming) in venues such as Foreign Language Annals, Handbook of Research and Practice in Heritage Language Education (Springer), Classroom Discourse, Language Teaching and the Linguistic Landscape (Springer), the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, The Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, and Language(s), among others, in the form of research articles and book chapters. His current projects include single-authored monographs under contract with Multilingual Matters and Cambridge University Press on Translanguaging and Spanish as a Heritage Language, and two special issues co-edited with Li Wei, to appear in 2022.

Josh has given paper presentations, invited academic talks, and workshops in the US, Canada, the UK, Poland, Norway, Spain, Germany, and Portugal.
