David C. Bell Theory Fellowship in Sociology
Overview
The donors wish to mark the career of Professor Emeritus David C. Bell, who is a professor in Sociology at the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, and the academic values that are important to him. Professor Bell's work focuses on sociological theory and his research interests include areas of attachment, family process, and social networking networks, particularly involving HIV/AIDS. The donors wish to encourage graduate students in the Department of Sociology to complete exemplary graduate research and pursue further social science research through doctoral study (for master's students) and basic and applied research (for doctoral students).
Selection Criteria
The David C. Bell Theory Fellowship in Sociology is to support master's thesis or doctoral dissertation fellowships for graduate students in the Department of Sociology in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Fellowship recipients shall be judged on the quality of their master's or doctoral thesis proposals by a committee of the Department's graduate faculty.
To be considered, applicants will submit:
- The approved thesis proposal, including approval date and name of their thesis chairperson
- A curriculum vitae limited to two (2) pages that emphasizes any research accomplishments since being in the MA program
Eligible applicants must have a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 out of a 4.0 scale and must be enrolled in the Sociology Master's Degree program at the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI with at least 18 credit hours completed towards their MA degree. To receive this award, Sociology students must be making adequate progress towards their degree (e.g., no incompletes and all conditional acceptances met). Students must also have completed their thesis proposal requirements within the two (2) previous calendar years prior to the deadline and show evidence of a promising research career and anticipated doctoral study.
Additionally, applicants who demonstrate a strong understanding of social theory in their thesis proposal will receive higher consideration.
Students may only apply once. This fellowship is not renewable.
