Society of Professional Journalists/Bettie Cadou Memorial Scholarship

Society of Professional Journalists/Bettie Cadou Memorial Scholarship

Overview

As a gifted, award-winning writer and photographer who covered an astounding range of topics - from the Indiana General Assembly, migrant workers and the homeless to race car drivers, the National Football League, medical issues, and so much more, Bettie Cadou was a beloved educator and a Hoosier pioneer. Bettie was the first female reporter to be given a silver-badge credential that permitted her access to the pit and garage areas of the Indianapolis 500 in 1971 to report for the Indianapolis News. Her persistence in the male-dominated field of sports writing eventually resulted in her extensive coverage of the Colts for national publications after the team's move to Indianapolis in the early 80's. Bettie served several years on the board of directors of the Indianapolis chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. When Bettie Cadou passed away in 2002, this scholarship was created to honor her memory. She was a former adjunct faculty member in journalism at IUPUI (now IU Indianapolis), a distinguished magazine editor, and was elected into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 2006.
