As a senior at IUPUI, one of the last steps to graduation was completing my internship with Visions Event Studio, a proposal planning service, located in Chicago. You know, the type of proposal where you get down on one knee and pop the question to your significant other.
I started working for Visions in March and I just finished up the internship a few days before writing this post. I stumbled upon the internship while scrolling through LinkedIn. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for me as Jenée Strickland, the owner and lead Visionairre, was in need of someone to take the lead on Pinterest, where they garner most of their business. It’s funny — before I knew that they needed someone specifically for Pinterest, in my interview I had mentioned I was obsessed with Pinterest and had been playing around with my own page in hopes of personal growth on the site. It was meant to be!
I was a social media intern for Visions, and I primarily focused on content for the company’s Pinterest, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages. I wrote captions and titles according to SEO-driven practices. I also created and customized the graphics for each post. I later took on the role of creating Instagram Reels and TikToks.
I had prior experience with managing social media accounts for high school extracurriculars, but social media is always changing so I was a bit rusty. I love studying trends to come up with content that will align with whatever algorithm I am working with. Again, most of my time was primarily spent on Pinterest, so I learned a lot about how to make pins that will perform well and not get your account banned. It is really easy to get banned because of what Pinterest deems as spam. I didn’t know this information before, and it was interesting to learn about.
One of my favorite moments working for Visions was when I finally got into a rhythm with creating and pushing out pins and I saw how well the content was performing. One of my idea pins received over 1,000 impressions — the most impressions that we had ever gotten! That was super exciting and motivating for me. I really enjoyed my time with Visions and couldn’t be more thankful for all that I learned and experienced with such an amazing team.
My college years have gone by in the blink of an eye. It is so weird to say I will be graduating in May 2023. Time truly flew by so fast! I feel as if I just graduated high school, but maybe the pandemic morphed my sense of time. I am in love with my classes this semester. I am taking all of the writing classes that I haven’t had the chance to until now. I couldn’t be happier! I think one of the biggest takeaways from my college experience and my experience at Visions Event Studio is to not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. I feel that is a universal piece of advice that can apply to just about anything in life. This time in our lives is such a big period of growth and development, so you might as well. You truly will never know until you try!
