Faculty Assembly Standing Committees

(Appointed) The Academic Affairs Committee applies to individual cases the existing policies of Indiana University, IU Indianapolis, and the School of Liberal Arts with regard to admission, dismissal, readmission, and grade changes, and it recommends to the Undergraduate and Curriculum and Standards Committee modifications or clarifications of these policies in the light of its experience. 

(Appointed) The Budget and Resource Planning Committee shall serve as the primary deliberative body of the faculty in terms of academic planning, resource allocation, and budgetary advising. The committee shall assist the Dean in the assessment of funding requests and other matters of resource allocation from departments, programs, and faculty, thus contributing towards the establishment of academic and financial priorities for the School. Every fifth year, in consultation with the Dean, the Committee shall review the most recent long-range plan of the School and develop a new plan if circumstances warrant.

(Appointed) The Community Outreach and Public Engagement Committee, a student and public facing committee, shall help publicly promote scholarship, academic programs, and liberal arts values; work with appropriate university offices in identifying marketing and branding strategies focused specifically on the School of Liberal Arts; and advise and assist in building the reputation of the School to increase majors and promote donations, scholarships, and sponsorships.

(Appointed) The Curriculum Committee provides faculty oversight for curriculum, and academic policies and standards for both undergraduate and graduate curriculum.

(Appointed) The Diversity and Inclusion Committee shall serve as the primary body working to create and update the School’s Diversity plan, define and work on ongoing efforts regarding diversity and inclusion within the School of Liberal Arts, prepare and analyze reports to monitor our success (in compliance with campus policies, initiatives, and reporting), provide oversight and planning for annual diversity training opportunities and education, and identify and/or nominate SLA faculty and staff who qualify for school-, campus-, and university-wide diversity awards.

(Elected) The Executive Committee may receive items from all faculty members for the agenda and shall determine the agenda for all meetings of the Faculty Assembly. If any member of the Assembly obtains the signatures of 15 percent of the members of the Assembly in support of a particular item, then upon submission of this item to the Executive Committee, it must be placed on the agenda of the next scheduled meeting of the Assembly. 

The Executive Committee shall appoint all committees of the Faculty (as prescribed in Article IV, Sec. 2) except where otherwise designated. 

The Executive Committee shall carry out the decision of the Faculty under the General policies or specific directives established by the Faculty Assembly, and shall transmit the decisions of the Faculty to the appropriate unit for implementation. 

The Dean may consult the Executive Committee as representatives of the Faculty on matters affecting the Faculty and School when it is not practical to consult the full Faculty Assembly. 

With input from the Faculty, the Executive Committee will discuss and recommend charges to Faculty Assembly Committees, which, in part, shall be based on Committee reports from the previous year(s).

(Appointed) The Faculty Affairs and Research Committee shall:

  1. consider questions, policies, procedures, and cases concerning conditions of faculty employment, professional conduct, and professional rights and responsibilities;
  2. oversee certain School of Liberal Arts awards, including the following: Outstanding Faculty Awards and Distinguished Student Awards. Guidelines for these awards shall be announced annually by the Committee; and
  3. advise the Associate Dean of Research and the Faculty on matters related to research and research funding in the school including, but not limited to:
    1. distribution of funds to promote research,
    2. review of proposals for SLA grant funds,
    3. review of sabbatical applications, and
    4. policy development regarding research activity and integrity.

(Elected) The Faculty Mentoring, Enhancement Review and Nominating Committee helps faculty anticipate and plan for promotion and career advancement; provides individualized guidance, counsel, and performance evaluation to help faculty develop a fulfilling career or a change in work focus; and conducts required enhancement reviews of faculty members receiving evaluations of less than satisfactory (below 1 on the SLA Faculty Annual Review Form) in one or more areas of faculty work (teaching, research, or service) twice in any four-year period.

This committee also prepare slates of candidates: 

  • for Executive Committee, for elected positions, and for all relevant campus-level councils, for presentation no later than second spring semester meeting of the Faculty Assembly,
  • to fill vacancies on the Executive Committee or elected positions between regular elections, slates of candidates for School representatives to the IUPUI Faculty Council, and
  • for other elections that may from time to time become necessary.

(Elected) The Promotion & Tenure Committee reviews dossiers forwarded in support of a candidacy for promotion and tenure along with the recommendation of the primary committee and the Chair. The committee also conducts School-level Three Year Reviews of tenure track faculty, assists the Dean when requested concerning reappointment, and examines departmental review procedures. One member, usually the chair, represents the School on the campus Promotion and Tenure Committee.

The Committee shall conduct a School-level Three Year Review of tenure-track and clinical faculty members, and provide them with a written assessment of their progress toward promotion and tenure. A copy of each assessment shall be provided to the faculty member’s Chair and to the Dean.

The Committee shall assist the Dean, at the Dean’s request, in evaluating recommendations received from primary committees and Chairs concerning reappointment, and shall serve to examine departmental review procedures.

The School of Liberal Arts, like every academic unit on campus, elects a number of representatives to the IU Indianapolis Faculty Council (this is in addition to any seats that may be filled by Liberal Arts faculty serving as at-large members). Each spring, the Faculty Council coordinator contacts the Faculty Assembly president to report how many unit-elected slots we will have for the coming year. The number may change slightly from year to year because these slots depend on the relative sizes of the faculty in different schools. The Nominating Committee puts forth a slate for these seats. In addition, the Nominating Committee may publicize names of colleagues willing to be elected as at-large members to maximize our voice at the campus level.

The University Faculty Council (UFC) is a representative body of elected members from the seven campuses of Indiana University, responsible for exercising faculty authority at the university.
